We continue to make advances in growing healthy,
wholesome green onions through a combination of our proprietary cutting-edge cultivation techniques and the latest in plant physiology applied to our farms in Tokushima.
I.S. Foods Tokushima makes
Headquartered on Awaji Island, we are a company that specializes in growing and processing green onions.
We chose Awaji as the site of our new farm in order to increase our production.
Our goals in this new frontierland include: year-round production thanks to the warm climate and using research into cultivation techniques to systematize shortening of harvest periods (thereby improving turnover), minimizing heat damage, maintaining stock viability, and significantly improving crop yields.
We are proud to produce superior quality green onions grown in the warm, fertile land of Awaji, along the banks of the pure Yoshino River.
Our Goals: Be No. 1 in domestic shipment market share & create a new model for Japanese agriculture

Our Goals: Be No. 1 in domestic shipment market share & create a new model for Japanese agriculture
Our company, I.S. Foods Tokushima Co., Ltd., was spun off from our parent company (Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture) to expand and was founded in June 2017 in Awa, Tokushima Prefecture. In order to provide a consistent supply of green onions of a consistently high quality, we utilize cloud-based data management, we have obtained ASIAGAP certification, and we actively incorporate new farming technologies. As a result, we received support from the national and Tokushima Prefecture governments to begin construction on a new factory and new headquarters in April of 2021.
In recent years, the circumstances surrounding farming in Japan have grown more serious, with an aging and shrinking population creating an irreversible decline in the amount of food being consumed in Japan. Climate change such as global warming has also made the environment much harder on growing fruits and vegetables. These factors have led to vegetable prices becoming stagnant but subject to bouts of violent price fluctuations.
In order for Japanese agriculture to survive, farmers need to: keep an open mind; gather information both from within Japan and from around the world; actively incorporate cutting-edge business models and technology; constantly challenge themselves to think globally and outside the box of conventional Japanese agriculture; and develop a new style of agriculture in Japan.
We are utilizing a model of agriculture that is profitable and is based on sustainable management ideas capable of lasting 100 years. We feel it is our duty to become a leader in Japanese agriculture to compete on the global stage and, together as a company of innovation and courage, we will bring a new future to Japanese agriculture.

Demand for Japan-grown green onions is increasing in meal prep, restaurant, and processed food industries. Aonegi Japan was founded by a group of young farmers located in various prefectures with the goal of providing a stable supply of quality green onions. Members study each others farms and processing facilities and share information to improve farming techniques.

Stable quality and supply is our motto, and our systematized production system and quality control allows us to offer high yields and high quality year-round.
We take advantage of Tokushima’s excellent soil by combining cutting- edge techniques with research and test grows to best emphasize the properties of green onions.
Our farm is run mainly by young people in their twenties who have a passion for farming. We also hire foreign interns to work together with our staff.
ASIAGAP is a Asian GAP (agricultural production process management) certification program that establishes an international set of standards. I. S. Foods Tokushima obtained ASIAGAP certification as preparation for expansion into overseas trade.
Our cutting-edge cultivation techniques have allowed us to create green onions with higher resistance to climate change (heat resistance, etc.) and we have greatly reduced time to harvest and increased harvests per year. A stable supply of product is our promise.
We have also been able to preserve almost every root stock after harvest, while reducing bitterness and improving crunchiness, resulting in green onions popular at high-end supermarkets.
Using traditional methods, root systems would frequently die out post-harvest, but our cutting-edge techniques and materials have allowed us to preserve almost all root stocks, leading to greatly increased crop yields.
Fibrous root systems are integral in plant growth as they offer efficient nutrient absorption and respiration. Denser root systems absorb a better balance of minerals, amino acids, etc., leading to fewer plant growth defects and healthier, more nutritious onions.
Green onions are known for their high nutritional value, but our cutting-edge cultivation techniques have pushed our onions to even higher levels of flavor and antioxidative properties.
Glutamic acid is an amino acid flavor compound commonly found in high concentrations in foods like kombu seaweed and cheese (parmesan). It is also present in seafood, green tea, dried shiitake, and vegetables like tomatoes and peas. Flavor improves even more when glutamic acid is combined with aspartic acid.
Aspartic acid is an amino acid flavor compound found in high concentrations in asparagus. It is also found in beans (especially bean sprouts), nuts, fruits like peaches and pears, beef, pork, and chicken.
β-Carotene is an orange pigment found in vegetables (like carrots) that is reported to have antioxidative properties.
Chlorophyll is a strong antioxidant and is a powerful remover of reactive oxygen.
Vitamin C promotes synthesis of collagen and helps maintain healthy capillaries, teeth, and cartilage. Vitamin C is becoming well-known for its antioxidant effects and is believed to be beneficial for health.

Anti-oxidative Properties Antioxidants refer to a variety of different compounds, including oxygen, proteins, and uric acid. There are many antioxidants found in foods, including vitamins and polyphenols. Different antioxidants can work to prevent generation of reactive oxygen, to inhibit oxidation, and to repair damage from reactive oxygen. Substances with these properties are said to have “anti-oxidative properties.”
